How to get started...

So you've decided that purchasing your next Subaru in the United States might be right for you. But what about the process? Rimrock Subaru makes it very easy to get started. In addition to the normal paperwork you'd expect; title, bill of sale, etc, there are a few other bits of paper that you should be aware of before beginning your transaction.

1. Certificate of Title

The certificate of title for your vehicle indicates that the vehicle is legally yours, as recognized by the state that you purchased it in. All new vehicle transactions require that the title be signed over to you, and in order to legally import your new Subaru, you must be able to reveal this document if requested. The title generally includes the following information:

  •     Identifying information about the vehicle, VIN #, make, model, and year of manufacture.
  •     The license plate number.
  •     Technical information; gross vehicle weight, motive power, and purchase price when new.
  •     The name and address of the purchaser or "registered owner" who would normally possess and use it.
  •     If money is owed on the vehicle, the name of the lienholder or "legal owner" to whom this money is owed.

2. Bill of Sale

The Bill of Sale is the actual document that records that the sales transaction took place. Included in the Bill of Sale should be the specific date that the transaction took place, at a specific locality, and for what sum of money the seller sold to the purchaser. This is used in tandem with the Certificate of Title as proof that the vehicle sale was made. Dealerships will have a bill of sale ready as they are required for all vehicle purchases.

3. Certificate of Origin

The Certificate to Origin is a document specific to international transactions. The Certificate of Origin does not specify what country you're purchasing the vehicle in, but rather where the vehicle was originally manufactured. The purpose of this document is to certify that the vehicle is legal for import into your country. Dealerships that routinely make international sales can tell you what may, and what may not be legally imported into your country.

4. Odometer Disclosure Statement

The Odometer Disclosure Statement states the current mileage on the vehicle along with addressing any odometer discrepancies that the vehicle may have. The purpose of this sheet is to help ensure proper identification of the vehicle, and provide an accurate statement from the seller to the vehicle buyer and lienholders.

5. Vehicle Export Worksheet

The Vehicle Export Worksheet is basically a summary of the information covered in the aforementioned documents. This sheet represents the cover page of the documents and is a quick reference for the official reviewing your paperwork. In addition, it also includes information about the seller of the vehicle, and the individual purchasing the vehicle.
